Florida Prosecutor Accused Of Shoplifting $43 Worth Of Cosmetics

A Florida prosecutor has been suspended after she was charged with stealing $43 worth of cosmetics from a Publix just north of Miami. Security cameras in the grocery store captured Stacey Honowitz taking beauty products off of the shelf and putting them into her purse.

She then went to the checkout line and paid for her groceries and then got into a separate line to purchase a lottery ticket. As Honowitz tried to leave the store with her teenage daughter a manager confronted her about the stolen items in her purse. She admitted to taking the items and returned them to the manager. She was charged with misdemeanor theft and was given a notice to appear in court.

Honowitz was suspended from her $108,000-a-year- job as a Broward County assistant state attorney while a review is conducted.

“We have been made aware of the incident by the prosecutor. She has been suspended pending an administrative review. She will be utilizing her vacation time until we complete the investigation,” said spokeswoman Constance Simmons.

Honowitz's lawyer, Jayne Weintraub, claims that it was an "honest mistake" and that she simply forgot to pay for the items.

“She inadvertently did not pay for the cosmetics when she checked out and paid for her $130.00 groceries,” Weintraub said in a statement. “She did not even leave the store after she paid. She then purchased lottery tickets and was chatting with another customer. There was no intent to commit a crime at all.”
