Two separate groups have officially named the professional soccer teams they hope to bring to Las Vegas.
Bill Foley filed a trademark for the name "Las Vegas Heroes" for a potential Major League Soccer team. The owner of the pro hockey team the Las Vegas Golden Knights told the Review Journal that the name was inspired by the city's response to the Route 91 Harvest festival shooting on Oct. 1, 2017.
“We thought Las Vegas Heroes would be a great name after the tragedy of Oct. 1,” Foley said.
Earlier in August another hopeful MLS team owner filed a trademark for the name "Las Vegas Villains." Billionaire and Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Wes Eden wants to bring an expansion team to play in Allegiant Stadium, KSNV reported.
Despite having two competing team names, Las Vegas is not guaranteed to get a MLS team.
The MLS commissioner Don Garber identified Las Vegas, San Diego, and Phoenix as potential expansion cities.
In an interview with ESPN, Garber said the league was spending "a lot of time" in Vegas and called it "an interesting market." However, he didn't name Vegas, Foley, or Eden as potential front runners.
When it comes down to team names, Foley thinks he has the upper hand.
“I think the Heroes always win," he told the newspaper.
